Solar energy has been the fastest growing source of renewable energy in the European Union (EU) in the first half of 2023, with a 13% increase compared to the same period in 2022. 

According to the latest report on changes in the European energy sector prepared by Ember, a non-profit organization working to accelerate the transition to a clean economy, Solar generation accounts for 161% of total EU electricity production in the first half of the year, making it the second most important renewable source, behind wind power (32%).

This growth in solar energy is due to a number of factors, such as the plower prices for solar panels, the growing demand for renewable energy, and public policies that promote their development.

In the first half of 2023, Renewable energy generation in the EU reached a new record of 530 TWh (terawatt-hours), representing 391% of total electricity production.This represents an increase of 12% compared to the same period in 2022.

Fossil fuel generation decreases by 17%

Renewable energy generation surpassed fossil fuel generation for the first time in the first half of 2023. The generation of fossil fuels, which includes coal, natural gas and oil, has been reduced by 17% in the same period, to 410 TWh.

The fall in fossil fuels was mainly due to the decrease in electricity demand, which fell by 51% in the first half of 2023. High energy prices and emergency measures taken by European governments to deal with the energy crisis have also contributed to the fall in fossil fuel generation.
